Message Ernie Ball makes a fine bass. In fact, I like to think of the Warwick as a cross breed of a Fender Jazz and a Stingray. It can really carry the same tone ranges of the two and really stands out nicely from all the other instruments due to the active pickups that put one hell of a deep growl.
I haven't been in a band for awhile and miss playing gigs. I hate speeches but have played in front a couple hundred people and love every minute of it. It truly is awesome.

Little advice that might help. As for playing with your fingers. Start with just the index and get the timing and motion down between the two hands to keep things clean. Then, incorporate the middle finger and just practice. I only have 3 months of formal training and taught myself the rest. Need to get down to the music theory though. Note: try to teach yourself not to rake strings. I do this as I am self-taught (Rake = I just played a D on the g-string and want a G off the d-string. Well, I'll pluck the D with my index and then strike the G with the same finger instead of alternating. You can still keep this very clean, but it's better to get in the proper habit of always alternating fingers every note...better for timing.

As for fun bass slaping and popping. Screw around with octives alot on this. Can't go wrong there. Anyhow, start off with just slapping. I keep a mostly open right hand doing this with my finger relaxed. Use your thumb to "slap" the string. Just a quick slap. Get good at this and being able to be clean while striking the a or d string. Then incorporate popping, use your index and basically hook it under the D or G string and give it a tug and let it slip of the tip of your finger. You'll eventually pick things up and incorpprate things to your style. For instance, I'll double pop a note of the D and G string using both my index and middle finger or to get two fast progression notes with the two.
Heck, I got into banjo picking the bass (it's different, but very melodic to let notes on 3-4 diff string ring in harmony) Basically, I incorporates strumming for the thumb and popping to get banjo picking.

Anyway, I don't know if this will be of any use to you at all or if you know this, but it never hurts.

Josh
